New Jersey NJ Auto Insurance Rate
Reader’s Question:
I am from New Jersey and I would like to know if anything can be done about NJ having the highest auto insurance rates in the U.S.?
Ben
Camden, NJ
Good that you asked, Ben.
I should tell you first why this is so. As you can observe, NJ is so much urban and is densely packed. Notice that there are more residents that drive cars than in other areas like New York City. Because of this, NJ is more prone to accidents, and high instances of vandalism and theft. This is exactly the reason why New Jersey residents pay the higher auto insurance rates in the entire country.
To add to this, there is also a great number of drivers in New Jersey who are uninsured. The uninsured chunk added strain the auto insurance industry which caused rates to go up. A 35 year old from urban Jersey City would pay $1,118 for Allstate coverage which is 72% more than if he lived in the rural Sussex County. Expensive auto insurance rates result to many uninsured driver which lead to a plan of capping urban rate increase until better car insurance regulations will be present for consumers. Better competition could also help control high auto insurance prices.
However, with or without the sate government’s help, you can always get yourself the lowest possible car insurance rates simply by shopping around. Just look around to find the best deal! You can start getting free quotes online by typing in your zip code on the relevant space found on this page.

My mother stays in New Jersey for 6 months and then goes back to FL for the rest of the 6 months of the year. Her permanent residence is in Florida. She wants to purchase a vehicle in NJ and keep it here for when she comes here. But, we want to know if she can use his FL drivers license to buy car insurance in NJ.
Archie

Yes, it should be possible for your mother to register and insure a car in New Jersey with her FL driver’s license. There are many seasonal residents or “snowbirds” that live part of the year in FL and the other part in a different part of the US or even abroad.
Your mother, since she is a resident of FL probably already knows that for any car she has in Florida for 90 days or more during the year that she is required to carry Florida car insurance of personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage liability (PDL) car insurance for on that car.
For information on how to register a car in New Jersey you mother can contact the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.

Reader’s Question:
My friend told me that if I do 6 hours of driving school my auto insurance will be lowered in New Jersey, is this true?
Jim
Newark, NJ
The NJ Department of Banking and Insurance (the insurance regulator for the state), states that New Jersey law requires insurance companies to offer discounts for motorists who have completed a Defensive Driving course approved by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
With some insurance providers this discount is called an accident prevention discount and comes with certain other requirements that you need to adhere to. To get more information on how much the discount would affect your auto insurance rates or cause them to be reduced by you would need to contact your car insurance agent.
I think that the six- hour in-class course is available for insurance rates reduction but the online course is not yet available to motorists. I suggest that you check with the NJ DOBI or MVC to find an approved school near you and inform you for certain if online school is an option already in New Jersey.
