Reader’s Question:

My ten year old “keyed” two cars on our block. On those two vehicles I have full coverage on them. Would this insurance coverage cover the damages done? I live in Vineland, NJ.

Rita

Vineland, NJ

Im sorry to tell you but the answer is No, this would not be covered under your car insurance policy in Vineland, NJ since your car was not involved in causing the damages. However, you may try to file it under your homeowners policy. You will need to verify with your car insurance agent to check if this is covered.

Also, you may be able to negotiate a settlement where the owners file it under their insurance policy and you reimburse them for the deductible and/or any other expenses.

I hope you find an easy way. I also have a ten year old kid and I often wonder, how do you discipline a kid?

Reader’s Question:

I live in Passaic New Jersey and have 2 unsafe driving offenses on my driving record. These offense are non-point violations, so will this raise the cost of my auto insurance?

Tim

Passaic, NJ

In 2004, New Jersey imposed a new automobile surcharge upon drivers who are convicted of “unsafe driving.” This conviction provides for fines, but specifies that no vehicle points are to be evaluated until after a driver is convicted of a 3rd unsafe driving violation.

If your auto insurance rates will be affected by these violations, it will depend upon your insurance carrier’s rating system. The NJ Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI) permits auto insurance companies to set up rating tiers. Under these tier systems, motorists are assigned to various rating tiers according to their driving record and a different risk factors.

To check if your insurance provider’s tier system will increase the cost of your insurance premium in Passaic New Jersey because of these violations on your driving record, you may ask your agent or contact the NJ DOBI since company’s rating tiers must be filed with this state agency.

Reader’s Question:

Will I have a problem if my vehicle insurance and registration are from Berkeley, California but my drivers license is from Irvington, New Jersey? Am I gonna get in trouble for not having a license from the state where my vehicle is registered and insured?

Paul

Irvington, NJ

State statutes or laws will determine if you need to have a driver’s license in the same state in which your vehicle is insured and registered. Some states require you to register and insure your car within a certain time period of becoming a resident of that state but do not mention the need for you to turn in your out of state license and getting a new state driver’s license.

The state of California, require that once you become a resident of CA you must obtain a CA driver’s license and also register and insure you vehicle in the state within a certain period of time. New Jersey is the same way, the state require you to surrender your out-of-state license and change over the registration and title on your car once becoming a resident of Irvington, NJ.
