Reader’s Question:

How long will it take to remove the insurance points for a DUI in my state. I live in Paterson, New Jersey.

Patty

Paterson, NJ

Once a motorist is convicted of a violation, both the NJ insurance companies and New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) can assign points and assess surcharges. The points placed by insurance companies are known as insurance points or insurance eligibility points.

They are generally the same as the points imposed for automobile points; but several serious infractions that do not have motor vehicle points assigned to them will result in an assessment of points by the insurers. The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI) fact page on purchasing insurance notes that insurance eligibility points for a infractions or accident are dropped when the incident falls outside the 3-year “look back” period. It looks like your DUI insurance points would thus be gone after three years but to be sure check with your insurance broker and/or the DOBI.
