Reader’s Question:

Is there any law in New Jersey regarding mandatory car insurance for young drivers who do not yet have a drivers license but only passed their permit test, or is this up to insurance carrier?

Parker

Elizabeth, NJ

The New Jersey DOBI (Department of Banking and Insurance) states that you should notify your insurance company when your teen is ready to get their driving permit. Any changes in your insurance cost will either apply when the young driver receives a permit or license, depending on the insurance carrier’s rating plan.

According to the DOBI, failure to disclose all of the motorists in a household to your insurance company can be construed as a form of insurance fraud, which is subject to cancellation of policy, civil fine, or penalty under the NJ Insurance Fraud Prevention Act. Most insurance company offer discounts for multiple vehicles, so it will most likely cost less for a young driver to be added to their parents’ policy than to buy their own. Any motorist, however, with a vehicle titled and registered in their name can buy insurance. You may check with your insurance agent, broker or insurance carrier to understand the factors to consider when making such a decision.

New Jersey NJ Auto Insurance Rate

Reader’s Question:

My friend told me that if I do 6 hours of driving school my auto insurance will be lowered in New Jersey, is this true?

Jim

Newark, NJ

The NJ Department of Banking and Insurance (the insurance regulator for the state), states that New Jersey law requires insurance companies to offer discounts for motorists who have completed a Defensive Driving course approved by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

With some insurance providers this discount is called an accident prevention discount and comes with certain other requirements that you need to adhere to. To get more information on how much the discount would affect your auto insurance rates or cause them to be reduced by you would need to contact your car insurance agent.

I think that the six- hour in-class course is available for insurance rates reduction but the online course is not yet available to motorists. I suggest that you check with the NJ DOBI or MVC to find an approved school near you and inform you for certain if online school is an option already in New Jersey.

Q: I’m looking for another car since my last one broke down. Do I need to have New Jersey SR-22 insurance right now? It might take me a couple months to get another car.

A: Every car must be insured, so long as somebody owns it, and the responsibility for the insurance rest on the person in whose name the car is. You have to carry New Jersey SR-22 insurance on your broken down vehicle, even if you can’t actually use it, until you transfer the title over to a new owner.

Also remember that if you decide to let go of your New Jersey SR-22 insurance, then your license will be suspended, because you have to have an SR22 to keep your license, even if you never step foot in a car.

While you’re searching for a new car, make sure you get one which will allow you to get better rates on your New Jersey SR-22 car insurance policy. Avoid big cars and small cars, and instead try to get one whose size is somewhere in the middle. Get something a few years old, but not too old so as to be lacking safety features.

Q: How can I improve my credit so I can save money on my New Jersey SR22 insurance?

A: The first thing you should do if you’re interested in improving your credit history to save money on your New Jersey SR22 policy is for you to go to each of the three credit reporting agencies and get a copy of your credit report. You’re allowed one free copy of each of these once a year, and after that you have to pay for them. Now, look at your information and get everything you need for the debts listed. If you have any which you do not believe should be there, or if some of your debts are from the right places but the numbers are wrong, you can write to the credit reporting agency to have it investigated and possibly removed from your report.

In order to improve your report, you will need to start paying off your debts. There are two things you can do: if you have a bunch of little debts, you can pay those off first so that you can get them out of the way, or you can tackle the debt which has the fastest growing interest first so that it doesn’t get bigger on you. Make sure you check your credit reports for innaccuracies once or twice a year.

Q: How can my credit affect the price of my Newark SR22 premium?

A: One of the largest factors in measuring car insurance rates which has arisen in the past decade is the use of the credit score on rating. It started out in the home owners insurance business, and has since moved to car insurance and is even beginning to infiltrat health insurance. A credit report which has a good history can be the difference between low rates and high ones, and many people who are excellent drivers with impeccable records find themselves paying for high prices on their Newark SR22 premium simply because they defaulted on a few credit card payments.

Car insurance companies will defend their use of credit scoring, and it is true that research shows that bad credit history is related in one way or another to filing more claims, which means that Newark SR22 policy holders who have bad credit will probably cost the company more. And if you are going to cost a company more, you should have to pay them more. It’s simply how it goes. By improving your credit report, you can watch your Newark SR22 insurance rates slide down to nothing.

Jersey City SR-22

Q: Why does buying a Jersey City SR-22 policy for a sports utility vehicle cost so much?

A: The cost of your Jersey City SR-22 policy will depend on the risk you pose, and a big part of that risk will be your car. If your car is very risky, you will pay a lot more. If your car is pretty safe, then other factors will take the fore when it comes to rating your car insurance policy.

Which is to say, sports utility vehicles are very risky. There are two reasons for this. One of them is likely to make your Jersey City SR-22 collision rates go up, but your liability and other coverages as well. SUVs have a lower center of gravity, which means that in some conditions they are more likely to rollover. Once you lose control, especially in icy or wet conditions, this could happen. One way you can save in this area is by getting rollover protection on your vehicle.

Another reason Jersey City SR-22 companies rate SUVs so high is because, due to their size and the position of their bumper, they are likely to rip through smaller cars in an accident and cause a lot of damage, especially on the injury level.

Cheap NJ SR22 insurance

Q: How can I find cheap NJ SR22 insurance?

A: One of the most tried and true ways of coming across cheap NJ SR22 insurance is for you to actively start searching out car insurance companies and comparing their rates. You can do this easily online, and it’s the best way for you to find a company which will give you the cheapest deal. You can also employ an agent to compare companies for you. Absolutely the first thing you must do, before even thinking about discounts, is comparison shop car insurance companies.

One of the reasons why this is so imporant is that a majority of people in this counrty pay more on their car insurance premiums than they would have if they had shopped around before selling on a car insurance company. Differences between companies are not small. In fact, the average amount that an American loses on car insurance coverage which could be regained by getting a wider range of quotes is four hundred dollars. Consider what you could do with an exrta four hundred dollars every six months, and also consider that some people pay as much as eight hundred too much on their premium. It goes beyond geing cheap NJ SR22 insurance.

Q: I work from home and don’t need to use my car all the time, although I do still like ot have it around. Since I don’t use it so much, is there some way to get a cheaper Elizabeth NJ SR22 insurance policy?

A: You can get a discount on your Elizabeth NJ SR22 car insurance policy if you meet the requirements of your car insurance company for the low mileage discount. A low mileage discount is usually given to cusomers who don’t do a lot of driving, usually along the lines of having driven less than five thousand miles in one year, or driving less than forty miles in one day.

Most companies should have this discount, but if your Elizabeth NJ SR22 insurance company doesn’t, then it would be a good idea for you to start looking around for another one. Get quotes from several different companies and make sure you verify the available discounts before signing on.

If you really want to save money, though, you can do without Elizabeth NJ SR22 insurance, which will get your license cancelled, but you’ll be able to get it back at the end of three years, and by that time your rates will be slightly lower.

Jersey City NJ SR22

Q: I was told that I should get a copy of my credit report before I go looking for Jersey City SR22 insurance. What does my credit have to do with anything?

A: Involvement of credit ratings in Jersey City NJ SR22 ratings is confusing for most, because all outward evidence would seem to point to the fact that how often you pay your bills does not relate to how well you drive, but there are many reasons as to why your credit may be considered when you take out an insurance policy.

For one, Jersey City NJ SR22 car insurance companies consider your past history with other car insurance companies when thinking about whether or not to sell you a policy, and this consideration takes into mind how often you have been cancelled for non payment, cancelled your policy all of the sudden, paid late, and so on. Similar information on your credit report, but for different kinds of bills, can also inform the insurance process for these companies.

Also, according to them, they have done studies on their claims information compared with credit reports of their Jersey City NJ SR22 policy, and from these studies have found that people who have better credit reports are less likely to file claims.

New Jersey SR22

Q: What insurance coverage is required for people who have New Jersey SR22 insurance?

A: If you have a New Jersey SR22 policy, then you should have three types of car insurance coverage. One of them, the mainstay, is your liability coverage. Your liability coverage will include bodily injury, for one person and a total for the entire accident, and it will also have property damage. Along with that, you need to have uninsured motorist coverage, which will take care of your damage if an uninsured driver causes an accident with you. You’ll also need personal injury protection, which will cover your own injuries.

If you have a car which is being financed or leased, then you will need even more coverage on your New Jersey SR22 policy, which will be part of the contract you have with the company and required from you if you don’t want your car repossessed. Coverages required by your financer will include comprehensive, collision, and gap insurance.
