New Jersey State Auto Insurance Rates
Reader’s Question:
I have auto insurance coverage here in New Jersey, and I have some members of my family that can drive included in the policy, as well. Now, if a member who’s not listed there gets in an accident, what’s going to happen?

Now, this is going to depend on the details of your auto insurance policy, the fine prints. Some auto insurance companies would automatically include all the members of your household on your policy. That way, if somebody gets in an accident like in the situation you gave, he or she will be automatically covered by the policy. This is very convenient. Now, there are other auto insurance companies that would ask you to list down all the members of your family that can drive and explicitly include them in the auto insurance policy. It would have to be explicit. The ones not listed in the auto insurance policy will not be covered. Again, we have to stress the importance of reading and understanding the policy. Or you can ask your auto insurance agent in New Jersey about this.
However, just to be really sure about this, make sure that you include everyone in your household that can drive. I think anticipating the ones that will be getting their driver’s license within the policy period will be a good idea. Ask your insurance agent about this type of inclusion. This may raise your auto insurance premium a bit because you will be including a teenager or somebody with minimal driving experience in your auto insurance policy, but this will make sure that everyone in your family or household will be covered by your auto insurance policy.
