Young Driver Insurance East Orange, New Jersey NJ
Reader’s Question:
We purchased our daughter a vehicle and she is 17 years old. We would like the title to be in her name and we are planning on getting her a separate car insurance policy in East Orange, New Jersey for liability purposes. Is it true that we may still be responsible if anything happens because my daughter is a minor.

Generally, yes it is true that as the parents of a minor normally you can be held responsible for their actions. In most states for a teen to get a driver’s license a parental consent form must be signed by you or legal guardian stating that they are liable for the minor and if they do acts which cause damages and injuries, the parent can be held responsible along with the minor.
In most areas even after your teen is 18 or older you can still be held liable for them if you still claim them as a dependent on your taxes. To know exactly how much liability you have as a parent of a seventeen year old daughter that wants to own her own car in East Orange, New Jersey I suggest that you check with a New Jersey attorney that is an expert regarding New Jersey liability laws.
